One of the advantages of doing tabletop macro photography is that it forces you to really "see" your subject. We’ve had these shells laying around the house for years, but I don’t think I ever really looked at them or appreciated how beautiful they can be. I placed this scallop shell on a black reflective tile with a studio lamp very close to and level with the left side of the shell. By positioning the lamp so close and low I got some light through the shell which made it look a little luminous. I also used a reflector to bounce some light back into the shell. I took two photographs here with only the focus point changing, and then combined them in Photoshop. This technique is called focus stacking and provides more depth of field than the lens is optically capable of providing.

To see more images where I used focus stacking, check my Focus Stacking set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157624044378381/

Other pictures of sea shells may be found in my Shells set.
