I love how these flowers have the orange circles right in the middle of the bud…it adds so much beauty to the flower! Really unique. You can see the orange circle better in this picture. The uneven leaf petals also add a lot of character to the flower and the picture…the imperfections makes this picture perfect!
These flowers were a gift to my dad for this birthday…he loves the outdoors and takes pride in our yard…so these flowers made a nice gift for him….and it looks great in our yard!!

Orange and black insects on butterflyweed

Some orange and black insects on butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa, in my wife’s flower garden. A dozen years or more ago, at her request, I dug up some of these plants from the wild, and planted them in her flower bed. I always managed to cut the roots in half, but they grew anyway. She has found that removing the old flowers encourages blooming all summer. They are relatives of milkweed.
Larger size available, and shows more detail.
Here’s a photo, in a different year, of what I believe to be more of the same kind of insects, on a butterflyweed pod, also in my wife’s flower garden (perhaps on the same plant), but not so close up. I’m guessing that these insects are Oncopeltus fasciatus, based on other photos found in the Milkweed Zoo group.
